What Is a Cork Borer Used For?
A cork borer cuts a clean, round hole through a cork or rubber stopper so that a glass tube, thermometer or thistle funnel can pass through it with a tight seal. It is the tool behind most bored-stopper set-ups in school chemistry: a boiling tube with a delivery tube for testing a gas, a flask with a thistle funnel for preparing carbon dioxide or hydrogen, or a thermometer held in a boiling tube. In biology, the same tubes cut neat discs from potato or other plant tissue for osmosis practicals.
Pick a borer close to the outside diameter of the tube — as a general rule slightly smaller for cork and slightly larger for rubber, which closes up a little after boring. Wet the borer with water or glycerol for rubber, press and twist it in from the narrow end of the stopper, and finish by boring from the other side or onto a wooden block rather than towards your hand. Push out the cut core with the clearing rod, and keep the edges sharp with a cork borer sharpener.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Number of sets — the minimum order is 10 units.
- Set contents — the listing gives diameters up to 18 mm but not the number of borers; ask JLab to confirm the sizes in the set.
- Sharpener and stoppers — add a cork borer sharpener and rubber bungs or corks to the same enquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
What hole sizes does this cork borer cut?
Holes up to 18 mm in diameter. The listing does not give the full list of sizes, so ask JLab for the set contents with your quotation.
What are the borers made of?
The cutting tubes are plated brass, and each is mounted in an M-shaped handle with a safety under-flange.
What is the rod for?
It clears the borers: after a hole is cut, the rod pushes the plug of cork or rubber out of the tube.
Which borer size should I use for a given glass tube?
Choose one close to the outside diameter of the tube — generally a little smaller for cork and a little larger for rubber, because rubber closes up slightly after boring.
How does it differ from JLab’s other cork borers?
This set lists plated brass tubes up to 18 mm with safety-flanged M-shaped handles and a clearing rod. The Cork Borer (Brass) listing is offered as sets of 6, 8 and 12, and the Cork Borer Set is chrome-plated brass with a cleaning rod.
Who manufactures this cork borer?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, and quotes for it directly.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of laboratory hand tools, glassware and school science apparatus, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The cork borer sets are made at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy them factory-direct, each set is visually checked before dispatch, and repeat orders are supplied by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example France in Western Europe, Estonia in Northern Europe, Tunisia in North Africa, Mauritius in East Africa and South Africa in Southern Africa. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
