What Is the Vacuum Desiccator Used For?
A desiccator protects materials from moisture in the air. The desiccant inside takes up water vapour from the enclosed space, so hygroscopic chemicals, dried samples and specimens waiting to be weighed stay dry. Pumping the air out through the stopcock lowers the pressure inside, which speeds the drying of samples, and atmospheric pressure then holds the dome firmly on the flange until the vacuum is released.
