Compaction and Strength Lab Exercises

One useful exercise shows what compaction does to strength. Students fill one set of cubes by hand rodding and a second set on a Vibrating Table, using the same mix. Crushed side by side at 7 days, the vibrated cubes usually come out stronger, and their broken faces show fewer air voids.

Teachers can also show what curing does to strength. Cubes from one batch are cast in Cube Moulds, and half are cured in water while the rest are left in air. Crushed at the same age, the air-cured cubes usually fail at a lower load.

What does calibrated against proving rings mean?
The load gauges are checked by loading a proving ring of known stiffness in the machine. The ring deflection, read on its dial and converted with its calibration chart, gives the true load, and the gauge readings are matched to it.

How should the machine be looked after?
Wipe the platens and ram clean after each session, since grit and cement dust wear the seals. Keep the hydraulic oil at its working level and watch for leaks at the pipe joints. Lower the ram fully before switching off.

Can a test be finished during a power cut?
Yes. The pumping unit has a hand operated pump as well as the electric drive, so the operator can carry on pumping by hand. The relays keep the motor from starting by itself when the power returns.

How many cubes make one test result?
Labs usually crush three cubes from the same batch at each age and report the average. A cube far from the other two points to a casting or curing fault and is noted on the sheet.
