How Is Filter Paper Used in the School Lab?
In class 9 science, students filter a mixture of sand or chalk in water to separate the insoluble solid, and use filtration to tell a suspension, whose particles stay on the paper, from a true solution, which passes straight through. To prepare a filter, fold the circle in half and then in quarters, open it into a cone with three layers on one side, seat it in a funnel and wet it with a little distilled water so it sticks to the glass or plastic. Pour the mixture down a glass rod and keep the liquid level below the rim of the paper. Cut to size, the paper can also line a petri dish for seed germination.
