What Is the Borosilicate Test Tube Used For?
It holds small samples for the class 11 tests for sugar, starch, protein and fat in plant and animal material: iodine for starch, the biuret reaction for protein, and Benedict’s reagent for reducing sugars, which is heated until the colour changes. Fill it no more than about a third when heating, hold it with a test tube holder near the mouth, warm it at an angle while shaking gently, and keep the mouth pointed away from people. Borosilicate glass takes these temperature changes far better than ordinary soda glass, but a very hot tube should still cool in a stand before it is washed.
