Working the Straight-Through Key
A quarter turn of the key opens the connection, and a further quarter turn shuts it. The key retaining device stops the key from working loose or lifting out of the barrel when the line is not under vacuum. As with other glass keys, a thin, even film of vacuum grease is normally applied, and the key is turned gently, never forced.
