What Are Kjeldahl Digestion Units Used For?
Digestion is the first stage of the Kjeldahl method. The sample is heated with concentrated sulfuric acid and a catalyst in a long-necked flask until its organic nitrogen has been converted to ammonium sulfate; the digest is then made alkaline and distilled, the ammonia is caught in acid and titrated, and the nitrogen — and from it the protein content — is calculated. Food, feed, soil, fertiliser and agricultural testing labs use the method, as do college and university chemistry, biochemistry and food science departments. The individual switches let you run only the flasks you need, while the shared energy controller sets the heat. Digestion gives off acid fumes, so run it with the fume duct connected to extraction or inside a fume hood, and wear acid-resistant gloves and eye protection.
Frequently Asked Questions
What flask sizes do the digestion units take?
250 ml and 500 ml digestion flasks, as stated in the listing. Say which size you use so JLab can confirm the configuration.
Is the fume duct included?
It is optional. The listing offers a fume duct made of lead with a pair of hangers; ask for it in your enquiry if you need it.
What else is needed to complete a Kjeldahl analysis?
A distillation unit and Kjeldahl flasks. JLab lists both separately, as well as a combined digestion and distillation unit, linked below.
