What Is a Manometer Used For?

A school liquid manometer is usually a U-shaped tube part-filled with water or a coloured liquid. With both limbs open, the two levels are equal. Connect one limb to a gas supply, a syringe or a funnel and the extra pressure pushes the liquid down on that side and up on the other; the difference in levels, h, gives the pressure difference as hρg, where ρ is the density of the liquid. Measured this way it is a gauge pressure — the pressure above atmospheric — which is how the manometer appears in class 9 work on pressure and class 11 work on the mechanical properties of fluids.

A classic practical joins the manometer by rubber tubing to a thistle funnel covered with a stretched rubber membrane. Lowered into a tall jar of water, the funnel shows the level difference growing with depth, and turning the funnel to face sideways or upwards at the same depth shows that liquid pressure acts equally in all directions. Read the bottom of the meniscus at eye level, apply pressure gently so the liquid is not blown out of the open limb, and top up the liquid to the same starting level before each class.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a manometer measure?
A difference in pressure, shown as a difference in liquid levels. With one side open to the air it gives gauge pressure, the pressure above atmospheric, of whatever is connected to the other side.

Is it supplied as a wall-hanging or a stand model?
The listing offers both a wall-hanging type and a type with stand. State which you need when you ask for a quotation.

What scale does it have?
The listing describes a 15 cm scale on the wooden base with a metre rule. Confirm the scale length and graduation with JLab if your practical needs a particular range.

Which liquid should I fill it with?
Water, often with a little colour added so the levels are easy to see, suits the low pressures met in school practicals. The pressure difference is hρg for the liquid used.

Who manufactures it?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly as the manufacturer.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a physics lab instruments manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The manometer is built at JLab’s own works rather than bought in from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers order it factory-direct; each one is checked by eye before packing, and repeat orders come from the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Peru in South America, Egypt in North Africa, Luxembourg in Western Europe, Kazakhstan in Central Asia and Spain in Southern Europe.

Fluid Pressure Apparatus

  • U-Tube Manometer — a U-tube on a polished wooden stand with metric graduation, in wall-hanging and table models.
  • Thistle Funnel — a stout-walled, pitcher-shaped funnel to use as the pressure probe.
  • Rubber Tubing — for connecting the manometer to the funnel or gas supply.
  • Equality of Pressure in Liquids — shows that liquids transmit pressure equally in all directions.

More physics apparatus is listed under School Lab Equipment.
