Choosing the Print Colour
Amber and blue graduations stand out against clear and pale liquids. White print shows up better behind coloured or dark solutions. A lab that keeps cylinders for set jobs can also use colour to tell them apart, for example blue for water and amber for acids.
Reading and Care
Stand the cylinder on a level surface and bring the liquid up to the mark, judging the lowest point of the curved surface at eye height. If the cylinder is still wet from washing, rinse it first with a little of the liquid to be measured so leftover water does not dilute the sample. The glass is highly resistant to chemical attack and can be autoclaved, and the hexagonal foot stops a toppled cylinder from rolling away. The scale is calibrated at 27 °C and 20 °C.
