What Are Mohs Hardness Pencils Used For?
Hardness is a mineral’s resistance to being scratched, and together with streak, lustre and cleavage it helps students identify an unknown specimen. With this set, a student draws pencils of increasing hardness across a clean, flat face of the specimen. A pencil that leaves a groove is harder than the specimen; one that does not is softer or equal. The last pencil that fails and the first that succeeds bracket the specimen’s place on the Mohs scale. The set is used in rocks-and-minerals practicals in secondary school geography and science and in college and university mineralogy classes.
After each stroke, wipe the spot and look again: a softer pencil can leave a line of its own powder that rubs off, while a true scratch stays as a groove. Return each pencil to the box after the lesson so the set and its notes stay together.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 boxed sets, often one per bench or student group.
- Specimens to test — mineral and rock collections are separate items and can be added to the same enquiry.
- Other identification tools — streak plates or the mineral test kit, if your practical also covers streak and other tests.
- Delivery details — destination country and city or port, delivery terms, and any tender reference.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Mohs hardness pencils used for?
They estimate the hardness of a mineral by scratch testing. The softest pencil that scratches the specimen and the hardest one that does not together show where it sits on the Mohs scale.
What hardness range does the set cover?
Hardness 3 to 9 on the Mohs scale. A specimen softer than 3 will be scratched by every pencil, so for such minerals the set only shows that they lie below 3.
How are the pencils made?
Each one has a mineral embedded in a brass holder fitted with a wooden handle.
Do notes come with the set?
Yes. The pencils are supplied as a boxed set with notes.
Are mineral specimens included?
No. This listing covers the pencils and their notes; JLab lists mineral and rock collections separately, and they can go on the same quotation.
What is the minimum order and dispatch time?
The minimum order is 10 sets, and orders usually leave the works within 7–10 working days after each set has been visually inspected. Export transit time depends on the destination and shipping method.
What should I send for an export quotation?
The number of sets, the destination country and port or city, your preferred delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, any packing or labelling needs, and a tender reference if there is one.
Who manufactures these pencils?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) makes the set at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly as the manufacturer.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a maker of geology and science teaching equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. These pencil sets are produced at JLab’s own works, not bought in from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy factory-direct; each set is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders come from the same manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and can supply buyers in every region — for example Italy in Southern Europe, Hungary in Eastern Europe, the Dominican Republic in Central America and the Caribbean, Myanmar in Southeast Asia and Kazakhstan in Central Asia. Tender buyers can see the JLab lab tenders page.
