How Does It Compare with Other JLab Mineral Test Plates?
| Plate | Material | Suited to | Size and packing as listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| White Streak Plates (EL-GE-7466) | Unglazed porcelain, white | Dark, metallic-looking and coloured streaks | 25 x 50 mm |
| Black Streak Plates | Unglazed porcelain, black | White and pale streaks | 25 x 50 mm |
| Glass Streak Plates | Glass | Scratch test to separate hard and soft minerals | 6 mm thick; package of 10 |
The white plate covers most streak colours students meet; add black plates for minerals with a white or very pale streak, and glass plates when the practical also covers hardness.
What Are White Streak Plates Used For?
The streak test works because a mineral’s powder keeps a steadier colour than the specimen itself, whose surface colour can vary with impurities, tarnish and weathering. A classic classroom example is hematite: a specimen may look grey or black, yet its streak on a white plate is reddish-brown. To test, rest the plate on the bench, draw an edge of the mineral across it once with firm pressure, and compare the colour of the line with an identification chart. A very hard mineral will scratch the porcelain instead of leaving a mark, which also helps to identify it. The plates suit rocks-and-minerals lessons in school science and geography as well as college earth science and geology labs; clean them with a damp cloth between groups.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the plates made of, and how big are they?
White unglazed porcelain, 25 x 50 mm. The surface is left unglazed so that it is rough enough to grind powder from the specimen.
Which minerals should be tested on a white plate?
Those with dark, metallic-looking or strongly coloured streaks. If the streak is white or very pale, use a black plate so that it can be seen.
Can one plate be used for many tests?
Yes. Wipe old streaks away with a damp cloth and let the plate dry; use a fresh part of the surface for each mineral so that colours do not mix.
What details does JLab need for a quotation?
The number of plates of each colour, the destination country and port or city, preferred delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, packing or labelling needs and any tender reference.
OEM Manufacturer
Behind the JLab name is Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a laboratory and teaching equipment manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road in Ambala, Haryana. JLab makes these porcelain streak plates at its own works, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy them factory-direct instead of through a trader, each plate is inspected by eye before packing, and the manufacturer itself handles repeat orders. JLab exports worldwide, serving buyers in every region — it can ship, for example, to Taiwan in East Asia, Myanmar in Southeast Asia, Argentina in South America, Afghanistan in South Asia and the Netherlands in Western Europe. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
