What Can Students Test with These Specimens?

Mineral class (present-day grouping)Specimens in this kitProperties to observe
OxidesMagnetite, hematiteMagnetite is strongly magnetic with a black streak; hematite gives a red-brown streak
SulfidePyriteBrassy metallic lustre and a greenish-black streak
Native elementGraphiteVery soft and greasy; marks paper
HalidesFluorite, haliteFluorite cleaves into octahedra; halite into cubes
CarbonateCalciteFizzes in dilute acid; rhombohedral cleavage
SulfatesGypsum as selenite, alabaster and satin sparSoft enough to scratch with a fingernail; clear crystals, fine-grained massive and silky fibrous forms of one mineral
SilicatesQuartz, microcline, muscovite, biotite, talcQuartz has no cleavage and scratches glass; microcline has two cleavages near right angles; the micas peel into thin sheets (muscovite pale, biotite dark); talc is soft and soapy

What Is the Mineral Study Kit Used For?

The kit gives students a small, labelled reference set for learning how minerals are classified and identified. Working through the classes, they test streak, lustre, cleavage, hardness and magnetism and see why each property matters: hematite and magnetite can look alike but differ in streak and magnetism, and the three gypsum specimens show that one mineral can take very different forms. Talc, gypsum, calcite, fluorite and quartz are also reference minerals of the Mohs hardness scale, so the kit supports simple scratch-test exercises. It fits minerals and rocks topics in school geography and science and introductory mineralogy in college geology labs.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 kits.
  • Testing tools — streak plates, hardness pencils or a mineral test kit are separate items and can go on the same enquiry.
  • Larger collections — mention if you also need a rocks-and-minerals set for the same class.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which minerals are in the Mineral Study Kit?
Fluorite, selenite, milky quartz, calcite, magnetite, alabaster, microcline feldspar, muscovite, talc, halite, biotite, hematite, pyrite, graphite and satin spar — 15 specimens, three of them forms of gypsum.

How big are the specimens, and are they labelled?
Each is approximately 25 x 25 mm, and every specimen is labelled for identification.

Which mineral groups does it cover?
The listing describes the specimens as examples of the major mineral groups classified in Dana’s Textbook of Mineralogy. Grouped by present-day classes, the named specimens are oxides, sulfates, silicates, a carbonate, halides, a sulfide and a native element.

Are testing tools included?
No tools are listed with this kit. Streak plates, hardness pencils and the Mineral Test Kit, linked below, are separate items.

How does it differ from the Introductory Earth Science Collection?
That collection is a larger unit of 75 number-coded rocks and minerals, 32 x 20 mm each, supplied with a streak plate, magnet and magnifier. The Mineral Study Kit is a smaller set of 15 labelled minerals only.

What should an export enquiry include?
Quantity, destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, packing or labelling needs and any tender reference.
