What Is the Moment of Force Apparatus Used For?
The moment (turning effect) of a force about a pivot is the force multiplied by its lever arm — the perpendicular distance from the axis of rotation to the line of the force. With the beam balanced on a knife edge carried by the cast-iron support, students hang slotted masses on the two hangers at measured distances either side of the pivot and adjust them until the beam is level. At balance the total clockwise moment equals the total anticlockwise moment, which is the principle of moments. Changing the masses and distances shows equivalence: a small force far from the pivot can balance a large force close to it, the idea behind every lever. The same set-up is used to find an unknown mass and to compare first-, second- and third-class levers.
