Reactions Shown With the Concentrated Acid
Copper reacts at once, forming copper(II) nitrate and dense brown fumes of nitrogen dioxide instead of the colourless gas the dilute acid gives. Proteins that contain aromatic amino acids, such as egg albumin, turn yellow with it in the xanthoproteic test, and the colour deepens to orange when ammonia is added. Iron dipped in the concentrated acid is made passive, so the attack stops.
