What Is the Peritoneal Dialysis Simulator Used For?
In CAPD the lining of the patient’s own abdomen, the peritoneum, does the work of the filter: dialysis fluid runs in through the catheter, stays while waste and excess water pass into it, and is then drained out and replaced, with the exchanges done by the patient at home. Because success depends on the patient following each step with great care, and a lapse in technique can let infection into the abdomen, the procedure is taught thoroughly before the patient goes home. The simulator lets a dialysis nurse demonstrate the exchange on a torso and lets patients, their carers and nursing students rehearse it until they are confident. It is used in dialysis and nephrology units, patient education programmes and nursing colleges.
