What Is the Plant Pigments Kit Used For?

Separating leaf pigments by paper chromatography is a listed class 11 biology practical and links directly to the photosynthesis chapter. A concentrated leaf extract is spotted near the bottom of a paper strip, and as the developer rises the pigments travel at different rates, depending on how soluble each is in the developer and how strongly it clings to the paper. The green extract splits into bands that typically include carotenes (yellow-orange), xanthophylls (yellow), chlorophyll a (blue-green) and chlorophyll b (yellow-green). Students measure each band and calculate its Rf value — the distance moved by the pigment divided by the distance moved by the solvent front — and discuss why a leaf carries several pigments that absorb different wavelengths of light. Conventional developers are often flammable organic solvent mixtures, which is why a kit that avoids hazardous developers is convenient for large classes.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Number of kits — minimum 10, each listed for a class of 40 students.
  • The contents list and reagent expiry dates, if you need them before ordering.
  • Extra chromatography paper or a chromatography cabinet, which are separate items.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many students does one kit serve?
The listing gives a class size of 40 students.

Does the kit use hazardous solvents?
It is described as separating plant pigments without hazardous developers. Ask JLab for the developer’s details and safety data sheet if your school requires them.

Which pigments can students expect to see?
A green leaf extract usually separates into carotenes, xanthophylls, chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b, although the bands you get depend on the leaf and the conditions.

Who manufactures the kit?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of biology practical kits and laboratory equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The kit is put together in JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy from the maker and repeat orders come from the same team. The company is registered under CIN U29309HR2017PTC069123 and holds MSME Udyam registration UDYAM-HR-01-0003849 (manufacturing enterprise). JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Austria in Western Europe, Estonia in Northern Europe, Lesotho in Southern Africa, Uzbekistan in Central Asia and Samoa in Oceania.
