How Does It Compare with Other JLab Small Compasses?
| Compass | Listed features |
|---|---|
| This plotting compass (EL-ME-7478) | Glass faced on both sides; aluminium ring of 20 mm diameter; durable plastic storage case |
| Magnetic Plotting Compass | Needle in a circular container with a scale printed on the inside of the bottom and a glass top; offered in several diameters |
| Magnetic Compass with Glass | Small metal compass with clear back and front; N, S, E and W printed on the front |
| Magnetic Compass | Strong body with clear visibility; 20 mm diameter with a graduated scale |
Choose this model when you want a see-through compass that packs away in its own case between practicals. The magnetic plotting compass suits buyers who want a printed scale and a choice of sizes, and the graduated magnetic compass suits reading angles as well as directions.
What Is the Plotting Compass Used For?
A plotting compass maps the shape of a magnetic field one step at a time. Students place a bar magnet on a sheet of paper, set the compass near the north pole, mark the two ends of the needle with dots, then move the compass so the tail of the needle sits on the last dot, and repeat until they reach the other pole; joining the dots gives one field line running from north to south. The same method traces the circular field around a straight current-carrying wire and the field of a coil or solenoid, which are practicals in class 10 science and in class 12 physics, and it is used again in college physics labs. Because both faces are glass, the needle can be seen from either side of the compass.
Keep the compass in its plastic case and away from strong magnets when it is not in use, because a strong field can weaken or reverse a compass needle. Check before a practical that the needle swings freely and settles pointing north–south.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 compasses; a class set lets every group trace field lines at the same time.
- Magnets and filings — add bar magnets and iron filings (linked below) if you are equipping the whole magnetism practical.
- Delivery details — destination, delivery terms and any labelling needs for export orders.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a plotting compass used for?
Tracing magnetic field lines. Students move the small compass step by step around a magnet or a current-carrying wire and mark the needle’s direction to draw the field pattern.
What size is this plotting compass?
It is mounted in an aluminium ring of 20 mm diameter.
Why is it glass faced on both sides?
The needle is visible from either side, and the glass protects it on both faces.
Does it come with a case?
Yes. It is provided with a durable plastic case for storage.
How does it differ from the Magnetic Plotting Compass?
That model has a scale printed on the inside of the bottom under a glass top and is offered in several diameters. This one is glass faced on both sides in a 20 mm aluminium ring and comes with a plastic storage case.
Who manufactures the plotting compass?
JLab — Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd — makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a physics and geography laboratory equipment manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. This plotting compass is made at JLab’s own works instead of being bought from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers get it factory-direct; each piece is visually inspected before packing, and repeat orders are dealt with by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide, serving buyers in every region — Finland in Northern Europe, Trinidad and Tobago in Central America and the Caribbean, Angola in Central Africa, Mongolia in East Asia and Bhutan in South Asia, for example. Tender information is available on the JLab lab tenders page.
Magnetism Practical Items
- Bar Magnets — north and south poles marked, sold in pairs with keepers.
- Iron Filings for Physics Lab — for showing lines of magnetic force alongside compass plotting.
- Magnetic Plotting Compass — an alternative plotting compass with a printed scale.
- Orienteering Compass — a liquid-filled base-plate compass for map work in geography.
