Chloride and Potassium Tests
A solution acidified with dilute nitric acid gives a white, curdy precipitate of silver chloride with silver nitrate; it darkens in light and dissolves in ammonia solution, which separates it from yellow silver iodide. On a clean platinum wire in a non-luminous flame, potassium gives a lilac colour, viewed through blue cobalt glass, which hides the yellow of any sodium present.
