Low-Temperature Refrigeration Practicals
Trainees start by fitting Manifold Gauges For Refrigeration Systems, which carry an R-404A scale. They evacuate the circuit with Small Vacuum Pumps, hold the vacuum to check for leaks and then charge liquid by weight.

Why is R-404A charged as liquid and not as vapour?
R-404A is a mixture of several HFCs. If vapour is drawn off the top of the cylinder, the parts that boil off first leave sooner and the remaining mix drifts from its design. Taking liquid from the cylinder keeps the proportions right.
Can R-404A be topped up with a different refrigerant?
No. Never mix refrigerants in one system. If a system holds an unknown or mixed charge, recover it, evacuate the circuit and recharge with the refrigerant named on the nameplate.
How should the cylinder be stored and handled?
Keep it upright, secured and out of direct sun, in a dry, ventilated store away from any flame. Use gloves and eye protection when connecting hoses, since liquid refrigerant freezes skin on contact. The cylinder is non-refillable.
