What Is the Rain Gauge Spare Measure Glass Used For?
In a BA pattern rain gauge the funnel collects rain into an inner vessel, and the water is then poured into this glass measure to read the rainfall. The graduations are in millimetres of rainfall rather than millilitres, because a rain measure is scaled to the collecting area of the funnel it belongs to; that is also why it should be used only with the gauge pattern it is made for. Each of the 100 divisions represents 0.1 mm, so daily totals can be recorded to a tenth of a millimetre for geography practicals, school weather station logs and environmental monitoring.
Hold the measure upright on a level surface and read the bottom of the meniscus at eye level. When more than 10 mm has fallen, measure the water in portions and add the readings. Rinse the glass with clean water after use and store it where it cannot roll or be knocked over.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 pieces, which also suits dealers stocking spares.
- Gauge it is for — confirm that your gauge is a BA pattern rain gauge, or order it together with JLab’s Copper Rain Gauge.
- Complete gauges — if you also need new gauges, add them to the same enquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which rain gauge does this measure glass fit?
It is listed as a spare part for the BA pattern rain gauge. JLab’s Copper Rain Gauge is a BA pattern gauge with a glass measure of the same 0 to 10 mm x 0.1 mm graduation.
How is it graduated?
From 0 to 10 mm of rainfall in 0.1 mm steps — 100 divisions in all.
Can I use it with a different rain gauge?
Only if that gauge is of the BA pattern. A rain measure reads correctly only with the funnel size it was graduated for, so for any other gauge ask JLab before ordering.
What if the day’s rain is more than the measure holds?
Measure the collected water in portions, read each one, and add them to get the total.
What is the minimum order and dispatch time?
The minimum order is 10 units, sold individually. Each glass is visually inspected and orders are usually dispatched within 7–10 working days; export transit depends on the destination.
Who makes this spare measure glass?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a laboratory glassware and weather instrument manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and operating from Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. Spare measure glasses are made at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so weather stations, schools, dealers and importers can source both the gauge and its spares from one manufacturer, with each piece inspected before packing. JLab exports worldwide and serves every region — for example the Dominican Republic in Central America and the Caribbean, North Macedonia in Southern Europe, Hong Kong in East Asia, Afghanistan in South Asia and Peru in South America. Tender buyers can use the JLab lab tenders page.
