Running Off the Two Layers
Support the funnel in a ring stand with the stopcock closed and a beaker underneath, pour in the mixture and leave it until two sharp layers form. Open the stopcock to drain the lower liquid, slowing to a trickle as the boundary nears the outlet, and close it just as the interface reaches the tap. Pour the upper layer out through the top neck into a second container, so it does not pick up drops of the lower liquid left in the stem. The heat- and chemical-resistant glass can be rinsed and reused between separations.
