Why the Image Looks Three-Dimensional
A stereo microscope gives each eye its own view of the object from a slightly different angle, so the brain combines them into a solid, upright image the right way round. That suits objects viewed whole on the stage rather than thin slides lit from below, and the low power keeps a wide area in view.
Magnification and Set-Up
The objective is fixed, so the power is decided when ordering: 2X with WF 10X eyepieces gives 20X, 2X with WF 15X or 3X with WF 10X gives 30X, and 3X with WF 15X gives 45X. Each student sets the interpupillary adjustment to match the spacing of their eyes, and the stage plate is turned to black for pale specimens or to white for dark ones.
