What Is the RAM Trainer Used For?

Random access memory stores binary words at numbered locations (addresses) and lets any location be written or read directly, in any order. The IC 7489 is a small TTL read/write memory of sixty-four bits, arranged as sixteen words of four bits each. It has four address inputs, four data inputs and two control inputs — memory enable and write enable — ten in all, the same number as the trainer’s logic inputs, while the four LEDs match its four data outputs.

In the experiment, students choose an address with the switches, set a four-bit data word, enable a write, and then switch to read mode to check that the word comes back from the same address, filling in the truth (function) table for the write and read modes. The 7489 outputs give the complement of the stored bits, so an inverted reading is expected. Switching the supply off and on again shows that RAM is volatile: the stored words are lost. The trainer supports the memory topic in B.Sc. physics and electronics, diploma and ITI digital electronics courses, where it links flip-flops and registers to the memory of a computer.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Mains input — give your supply voltage; the listing states the 5 V DC internal supply only.
  • Patch cords — not mentioned in this listing; ask for them in the same enquiry if needed.
  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which memory IC does the trainer use?
The IC 7489, a TTL random access memory, placed inside the cabinet with its connections brought out to sockets on the front panel. The ten SPDT logic inputs and four output LEDs are used to address, write and read it.

Why do the LEDs show the opposite of the data I wrote?
The 7489 outputs present the complement of the stored data, so a stored high bit reads as low and a stored low bit as high. Students record this when they build the truth table.

Does the memory keep its data when switched off?
No. Like other static RAM, the 7489 is volatile, so its contents are lost when power is removed, which is itself a useful point to demonstrate.

Who manufactures this RAM trainer?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd) makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian maker of electronics trainers and educational laboratory equipment, incorporated in 2017 and located on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The RAM trainer is assembled at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so colleges, dealers and importers buy factory-direct, each unit is visually inspected before it ships, and repeat orders come from the same manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Hong Kong in East Asia, Tanzania in East Africa, the USA in North America, Algeria in North Africa and Gambia in West Africa. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
