How Is the Cell Structure Microslide Used in Class?

The set is an introduction to the idea that all living things are made of cells, and that cells differ. Cork is the material in which Robert Hooke first described “cells”; onion skin and cheek cells are the plant and animal cells students later stain and mount themselves in the class 9 practical on the fundamental unit of life; the green leaf shows plant cells with chloroplasts; and blood and nerve cells show how animal cells take different shapes for different jobs. Bacteria, at 1500x, are cells without a nucleus, while the virus at 50,000x — a magnification only an electron microscope reaches — is a useful prompt for asking why viruses are not counted as cells.

Because the magnification is printed for each image, students can compare sizes as well as shapes. Work in groups with one set and one Microslide Viewer each, let students name the features shown by the arrows and callouts, and use the questions in the text folder for discussion or homework. The set suits class 8 and class 9 lessons on the cell and revision at the start of class 11 biology; store each Microslide in its folder pocket after the lesson.

Frequently Asked Questions

What magnifications are shown on The Cell Structure Microslide?
Each image carries its own: onion skin 200x; green leaf, cork and nerve cells 300x; cheek cells and blood cells 900x; bacteria 1500x; and the virus 50,000x.

Can students see these cells with a school microscope instead?
Several of them, such as onion skin, cheek cells and cork, are standard class practicals with a light microscope; the virus image is beyond any light microscope, which is one reason a photographed set is useful alongside real slides.

Is the viewer included?
It is not part of this listing. The Microslides are meant to be viewed through a Microslide Viewer, which JLab supplies as a separate item.

Who supplies it?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) in Ambala, India, which quotes for this Microslide set directly as part of its biology range.
