What Is the Earthworm Microslide Used For?
The earthworm is the classic example of a segmented worm, and this set lets students study its body systems from prepared microscope views. The clitellum is the glandular band that secretes the cocoon; the setae are tiny bristles that grip the soil as the worm moves; and the nephridia remove wastes through openings called nephridiopores. Because an earthworm carries both ovaries and testes, the images of the ovary, the sperm in the seminal vesicle and the gonopore introduce a hermaphrodite animal, while the heart and the ventral blood vessel belong to its closed circulatory system and the nervous system runs as a ventral nerve cord. The digestion topic follows the gut from the mouth to the anus.
The set matches the earthworm section of the class 11 chapter on structural organisation in animals and college zoology courses, and it is a practical biology teaching aid where dissection is not part of the course. Give each group a set and a viewer, ask students to find each labelled feature, and finish with the questions in the text folder. Keep the Microslides in the folder pocket between lessons.
