What Is a Thermal Cycler Used For?

A thermal cycler runs the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which copies a chosen stretch of DNA many times over. The instrument repeatedly heats and cools the samples through the denaturation, annealing and extension steps of each cycle, so its block temperature control and ramp rate decide how well and how quickly a run goes.
