What Is the Transcription of Genetic Code Model Used For?
Francis Crick’s central dogma describes the flow of information from DNA to RNA to protein. In transcription the gene’s sequence is copied into messenger RNA, and that RNA carries the code as a string of codons, each made of three bases. During translation, transfer RNA molecules with matching anticodons bring the right amino acids to the ribosome.
The code itself has properties students are asked to explain. It is a triplet code; it is unambiguous, since each codon stands for one amino acid only; it is degenerate, because some amino acids have more than one codon; it is read continuously without punctuation; and it is nearly universal across living things. AUG codes for methionine and also serves as the start signal, while UAA, UAG and UGA are stop codons. The code was worked out through the experiments of Marshall Nirenberg and the Indian-born chemist Har Gobind Khorana, among others. A model lets learners follow a sequence from DNA to codons step by step instead of memorising a table.
