What Is the Welch Type Tuning Fork Used For?

When struck, a tuning fork vibrates at one frequency and gives an almost pure tone, which makes it the reference source for sound practicals: showing that sound comes from vibration and that pitch depends on frequency in class 9 science, finding the frequency of a stretched string on a sonometer, and measuring the speed of sound in air with a resonance tube in class 11 physics. Strike the prong on a rubber pad or with a rubber hammer, never on the bench or another metal object, as a hard blow can damage the fork and change its note. Hold it by the stem, not the prongs, and press the stem on the table or a resonance box when the class needs to hear it more loudly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “Welch type” mean?
It describes the pattern of the fork. This tuning fork is JLab’s own manufacture, made in Ambala, and is not the product of any other company that uses the Welch name.

Which frequencies can I order?
The listing says the fork is offered in various specifications but does not list the frequencies. Give the notes or frequencies your practicals use, and the quotation will confirm the forks supplied.

Is a rubber pad or hammer included?
Neither is part of this listing. A rubber hammer and other sound apparatus are separate items, linked below, and can go on the same enquiry.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a physics and science lab equipment manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The tuning fork is made at JLab’s own works instead of being bought from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy straight from the factory, each fork is checked by eye before dispatch, and repeat orders are dealt with by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to every region — for example Mongolia in East Asia, Estonia in Northern Europe, Tajikistan in Central Asia, Canada in North America and Singapore in Southeast Asia. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
