Watching the Rays Meet at the Focal Point
Put the double convex lens in the path of the five beams and each ray is refracted inwards; the beams cross at one shared point, the focal point, and spread apart again beyond it. Measuring from the centre of the lens to that crossing point gives the focal length directly. The plano-convex lens also brings the beams together.
Swap in the double concave or plano-concave lens and the beams spread outwards instead, as though they started from a point on the ray-box side of the lens. Setting the shapes side by side shows that lenses thicker in the middle converge light and lenses thinner in the middle diverge it.
