Combining the Resistors
Connected in series, resistances add: the 10 Ω and 20 Ω resistors together give 30 Ω, and all five in a line give 1131 Ω. Connected in parallel, the combined resistance is smaller than the smallest single value, because 1/R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + …; the 10 Ω and 20 Ω in parallel give about 6.7 Ω. Measuring voltage and current for each arrangement lets students check these figures with R = V/I. Since power is P = I²R, keep the current low enough that each resistor stays within its 7 W rating.
