What Does the Distillation Tower Model Demonstrate?
In a real column, liquid runs down while vapour rises, and wherever the two meet the cooler liquid condenses the heavier compounds out of the lighter vapour stream. Repeated contact up the column leaves the vapour richer in the lighter components at the top and sends the heavier ones down to the base. In the model the falling liquid and the rising gas bubbles take the place of liquid and vapour, so this counter-current contact can be watched while the model runs.
