Adsorption in Packed Bed (code EL-MTLE-2664) is a laboratory set-up for studying adsorption as a feed solution flows through a packed column. Reading the Breakthrough Curve
When feed enters a fresh column, the packing near the inlet takes up the solute and the outlet stream leaves almost free of it. An adsorption zone then travels along the bed as the packing saturates. Analysing the outlet stream at intervals timed on the stopwatch gives outlet concentration against time: it stays low, rises steeply at breakthrough and levels off near the feed concentration once the whole bed is saturated. Repeating the run on the three columns shows how bed diameter and packing height shift the breakthrough time.

The set-up needs a water supply and drain and a 1 phase, 220 V AC, 1.5 kW electricity supply. The instruments, laboratory glassware and chemicals for analysing the samples depend on the adsorbate and adsorbent system adopted and are arranged by the laboratory.
