What Is the Burns and Scalds Chart Used For?
A burn is caused by dry heat such as a flame or a hot object, or by electricity, chemicals, friction or radiation; a scald is caused by wet heat — hot liquid or steam. Burns are usually described by depth, from superficial to full-thickness. For a heat burn, current first-aid courses teach cooling the area under cool running water for a sustained period, removing rings or tight items before swelling starts, covering the burn loosely with cling film or a clean non-fluffy dressing, and avoiding ice, butter and creams. Large, deep or facial burns need medical help.
Chemical burns and burning clothing are the two emergencies a school chemistry lab must be ready for. For a chemical burn, protect yourself, brush off any dry chemical, flush the skin with plenty of running water and remove contaminated clothing. A person whose clothing catches fire should stop, drop and roll, or be wrapped in a fire blanket or heavy fabric to smother the flames. Hang the chart in chemistry and science labs, home science rooms, workshops and canteens, and use it in first-aid and lab safety training. The laminated surface wipes clean and the chart rolls up on its rollers.
