What Does a Start Capacitor Do?
A single-phase induction motor cannot start on its own, because one winding alone gives no rotating field. A start capacitor in series with the auxiliary winding shifts the phase of that winding’s current, which produces the starting torque; once the motor is up to speed, a centrifugal switch or relay takes the capacitor out of circuit.
