What Is the Colpitts Oscillator Trainer Used For?
In a Colpitts oscillator the tank circuit is one inductor with two capacitors in series across it. The junction of the two capacitors returns part of the output to the amplifier input, so the ratio of the capacitors sets how much signal is fed back, while the inductance and the series value of the two capacitors set the frequency. Because it needs no tapped coil, the circuit is widely used to generate sine waves at radio frequencies.
