How Does It Compare with Other JLab Calorimeters?

Choose this model when you want a copper working vessel inside an aluminium jacket with a rigid bakelite cover. The other copper calorimeter is listed with a lagged inner vessel and a lid with its own stirrer, while the plain calorimeter listing lets you pick the vessel metal; ask JLab if your choice depends on size.

What Is a Copper Calorimeter Used For?

A calorimeter holds a liquid while heat is exchanged, so the heat gained or lost can be worked out from mass, specific heat capacity and temperature change. In class 11 physics practicals it is used to find the specific heat capacity of a solid or a liquid by the method of mixtures and to plot the cooling curve of hot water; it also serves for latent heat of fusion of ice in many college labs. Copper is chosen for the working vessel because it conducts heat well, so the vessel quickly reaches the temperature of its contents, and because its low specific heat capacity means it takes up little of the heat being measured. An outer jacket of this kind is there to cut down heat exchange with the room.

Before an experiment, weigh the empty inner vessel (with stirrer) so its own heat can be included in the calculation, fill it no more than about two-thirds, stir gently and read the thermometer through the cover. Dry the copper vessel after use to keep its surface clean.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 units; schools often plan one calorimeter per practical group.
  • Stirrer and stoppers — say whether you need them with the calorimeter, as the listing does not state that they are supplied.
  • Thermometers — not included; add them to the enquiry with the range you need.
  • Size — if your worksheet assumes a particular vessel size, give it so JLab can confirm the fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What experiments is this copper calorimeter used for?
Mainly specific heat capacity experiments — finding the specific heat of a solid or liquid by the method of mixtures — and related heat experiments such as cooling curves in school and college physics labs.

Is a thermometer included?
No. The thermometer is not included; the bakelite cover has a hole and rubber stopper position to hold one, so order thermometers separately.

Does it come with a stirrer?
The cover has a second hole for a stirrer, but the listing does not say that a stirrer is supplied. Mention it in your enquiry and JLab will confirm what is included.

Why is the inner vessel made of copper?
Copper is a good conductor with a low specific heat capacity, so the vessel settles at the temperature of its contents quickly and absorbs only a small, easily calculated share of the heat.

What does jointless mean here?
The copper vessel is formed without joints, so there are no seams for liquid to leak through during heating and cooling experiments.

What should an export enquiry include?
The quantity, destination country and port or city, preferred delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, any packing or labelling needs, and a tender reference if there is one.

Who manufactures this calorimeter?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd) makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly as the manufacturer.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a physics and science lab apparatus manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The calorimeter is made at JLab’s own works and is not bought in from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers receive it factory-direct; each one is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — Angola in Central Africa, Switzerland in Western Europe, Kenya in East Africa, Mongolia in East Asia and Latvia in Northern Europe are examples. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.

Heat Experiment Apparatus

  • Copper Calorimeter — a lagged copper calorimeter with a stirrer built into its lid, for cooling experiments.
  • Calorimeter — plain calorimeters listed in copper, aluminium and soldered tin.
  • Calorimeter Blocks — nickel-plated aluminium-alloy blocks drilled for a thermometer and an immersion heater.
  • Stirrer — glass stirring rods with fused ends.
