What Is the Fire and Fire Extinguishers Chart Used For?

A fire needs three things at once — fuel, heat enough to reach the fuel’s ignition temperature, and oxygen — and every method of fighting fire works by removing one of them: cooling with water takes away heat, a blanket or foam cuts off oxygen, and clearing combustible material removes fuel. Fires are grouped into classes according to what is burning, such as ordinary solids like wood and paper, flammable liquids, flammable gases, burning metals, and cooking oils and fats, although the letters used for the classes differ between national standards. Water, foam, carbon dioxide and dry chemical powder extinguishers each suit particular classes, and water must never be used on burning oil or live electrical equipment. Many training courses teach the PASS method for using a portable extinguisher: pull the pin, aim at the base of the fire, squeeze the handle and sweep from side to side.

The chart supports middle-school science lessons on combustion and flame (class 8 in the NCERT scheme), laboratory safety inductions for students and staff, school fire drills and vocational courses in fire and industrial safety. Hung near the laboratory door or next to the fire extinguisher for school labs, it keeps the basic rules in view. It is a teaching aid and does not replace hands-on fire-safety training or the fire regulations that apply to your building.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 charts, each sold individually; schools often order one for each laboratory and workshop.
  • Safety equipment — fire extinguishers and fire blankets can be quoted in the same enquiry.
  • Language — listed in English only.
  • Artwork — ask JLab for a larger image of the current print if you need to check how the fire classes and extinguisher types are shown against your local standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the chart cover?
Fire and fire extinguishers, as its title says; the listing does not itemise the panels. Ask JLab for a larger image of the current print before ordering, especially if your country uses its own fire-class lettering.

Where should the chart be displayed?
In science laboratories, workshops, corridors near fire points and classrooms where combustion is taught, so students see it before they need it.

Is the chart durable enough for a laboratory wall?
It is laminated on both sides with 30 micron heat-sealable polyester over 130 gsm coated art paper, and the surface is listed as markable and washable, so it can be wiped clean.

What are its size and weight?
It measures 58 x 90 cm, rolls to 58 x 4 x 2 cm on its plastic rollers and weighs 228 g.

What should an export enquiry include?
The quantity, the destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, packing or labelling requirements and any tender reference.

Who supplies the Fire and Fire Extinguishers chart?
