How Multi Point Fuel Injection Works
In an MPFI engine, the motorised fuel pump sends petrol from the tank through the fuel filter to the fuel rail, which feeds an electronic injector at each cylinder’s inlet port. The ECU decides when each injector opens and for how long, and so sets the quantity of petrol sprayed towards the inlet valve. Ignition is handled separately: the igniter switches the ignition coil, and the distributor sends the high voltage to the spark plugs.
Fuel Injection Instead of a Carburettor
A carburettor meters petrol by the air flowing through it and feeds all the cylinders through one manifold; MPFI meters fuel electronically at each port, so every cylinder gets its own measured charge. The key card and literature supplied with the model explain its working.
