Workshop Practice: Filing Curves and Holes
Fitting students meet curved work early, when a job needs a radius on a corner or an opening no drill can make. The outline is marked with a Single Ended Scriber, and a row of holes is drilled just inside it on a Drill Press. Once the waste is knocked out, the rounded face of the file opens the holes into a smooth curve that meets the line.
The same file deburrs the inside edge of a tube or bored part, and files half round grooves in small parts held in a Hand Vice. Teachers can use it to show why a rounded face suits concave curves and a flat face suits flat and convex ones.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which face do I use for which surface?
Use the rounded face for concave curves and the inside of holes, and the flat face for flat and convex surfaces. Roll the file slightly as you push along a curve, so the cut follows the radius without leaving flats.
What does Cut 1 mean?
Cut 1 is a grade in the numbered system of file cuts, in which a lower number means coarser teeth. This file is meant for shaping and taking off metal. Follow it with a finer file where a smooth finish is needed.
When should I choose a half round file over a round file?
A half round file suits larger curves and has a flat face as well, so one file covers more of a job. A Round File reaches into small holes and tight radii that the half round face cannot enter.
Can it deburr the inside of a pipe?
Yes. Run the rounded face around the inside edge of the cut end with light strokes until the burr is gone. On cylindrical parts it also takes material off the inner surface to open the bore slightly.
How do I keep the file cutting well?
Fit the handle firmly before use, cut only on the forward stroke and brush out the teeth when chips build up. Store the file so its teeth do not touch other files or tools.
