What Is the Helium Neon Laser Used For?
A helium–neon laser gives a narrow, well-collimated and highly coherent beam, which makes it the standard light source for wave-optics experiments. On an optical bench it is used to find the wavelength of light with a diffraction grating, to show single-slit and double-slit (Young’s) diffraction and interference, to measure the width of a fine wire or slit from its diffraction pattern, to study beam divergence and polarisation, and to produce fringes in a Michelson interferometer. These experiments appear in B.Sc. and M.Sc. physics optics labs and engineering physics practicals, and the visible patterns are also a clear way to demonstrate class 12 wave optics.
Fit the laser on the bench, use the up-down motion to bring the beam to the height of the slit or grating, and project the pattern onto a screen or wall. Because it is designed for continuous working, it can stay on through a full practical session. Even at 2 mW, never look into the beam or at its mirror-like reflections, keep the beam below eye level, and switch it off when students are rearranging components.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the minimum order is 10 lasers.
- Mains supply — the listed supply is 220 V AC, 50 Hz; tell JLab if your lab uses a different mains voltage or plug.
- Accessories — gratings, slits, a grating stand and filters are listed separately as Laser Accessories; add them and an optical bench to the same enquiry if you need a complete set-up.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the output power of this laser?
The listing gives an output of 2 milliwatts, a level commonly used in teaching labs for diffraction and interference work.
What wavelength does it emit?
The listing does not state the wavelength. The common red helium–neon line is at 632.8 nm, but ask JLab to confirm the wavelength of the tube quoted to you, since experiments such as wavelength determination depend on it.
Does it need a separate power supply?
No. The power supply is built in and the laser works on 220 V AC, 50 Hz mains.
Can it be mounted on our optical bench?
It is designed to mount on an optical bench, and the beam can be moved up and down to line it up with other components. Send the bench type or rider size with your enquiry so JLab can confirm the fit.
What do you need for an export quotation?
The quantity, destination country and port or city, preferred terms such as FOB or CIF, packing or labelling instructions, and any tender reference.
Who manufactures it?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) builds the laser set-up at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of physics and optics laboratory equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. This laser is made at JLab’s own works rather than traded, so universities, colleges, dealers and importers buy it factory-direct, every unit is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders and after-sales queries are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Zambia in East Africa, Georgia in Eastern Europe, Nepal in South Asia, Turkey in the Middle East and France in Western Europe. Tender buyers can refer to the JLab lab tenders page.
