What Is the Immobilised Enzymes Kit Used For?
An immobilised enzyme is fixed to, or trapped inside, an inert support instead of being dissolved in the reaction mixture. That lets it be held in a column or in beads, reused many times, separated easily from the product and run as a continuous process — which is how many enzymes are used in industry. The kit covers three examples: yeast cells in fermentation, where yeast turns sugar into ethanol and carbon dioxide; immobilised glucose isomerase, the enzyme industry uses to convert glucose into the sweeter sugar fructose; and the preparation of an immobilised invertase, which splits sucrose into glucose and fructose.
A common school method traps the enzyme or cells in calcium alginate beads, packs the beads into a column and tests the liquid that runs through for the product sugar; ask JLab which method and test reagents the teachers guides use. The kit supports A level biology and chemistry, the fermentation and biotechnology chapters of CBSE class 12 biology, and introductory industrial-microbiology classes in college.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Number of kits — the minimum order is 10; each kit is designed for 10 student groups.
- Packing list — ask for the itemised reagents, including whether yeast and the sugar substrates are supplied.
- Apparatus — confirm which columns, syringes or glassware you need to provide.
- Batch expiry — ask for the expiry date of the enzyme batch you are quoted.
Frequently Asked Questions
What activities does the Immobilised Enzymes Kit include?
Yeast cells and their use in fermentation processes, the application and use of immobilised glucose isomerase, and the preparation of immobilised invertase.
Why are enzymes immobilised?
An immobilised enzyme can be reused, is easily separated from the product instead of ending up in it, and suits continuous processing, which lowers the cost of using enzymes on an industrial scale.
What does glucose isomerase do?
It converts glucose into fructose. In industry the immobilised enzyme is used to make fructose-rich syrups from glucose.
Who is the kit written for?
It is geared to A level, with applications in biology and chemistry. One kit serves 10 groups of students and includes teachers guides and worksheets.
Who manufactures this kit?
JLab, the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of biotechnology and biology teaching kits in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The kit is put together at JLab’s own works rather than bought in from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy it factory-direct, every kit is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — Georgia in Eastern Europe, Guyana in South America, Canada in North America, Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia and Mongolia in East Asia, for example. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
