Wall Fixing Practicals for Trade Students
Electrician and plumbing trainees fix a conduit saddle, pipe clip or small bracket to a brick wall. They set out the holes with the Tape Measure and mark them level with the Levels. Each hole is drilled with the bit that matches the wall plug, using a drill with hammer action, and the plug goes in before the screw.
Students drilling through a ceramic tile start without hammer action until the glaze is pierced, then switch it on in the brick behind. Teachers can point out the dust coming up the flutes and show why the bit is pulled back now and then to clear it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need hammer action to drill masonry?
For hard brick and concrete, yes, because the hammer action breaks up the material ahead of the tip. Soft brick and block can be drilled on rotation only. Never use hammer action with twist drills meant for metal.
What is the 1/4 inch hex shank for?
It fits a 1/4 inch hex quick-change chuck or bit holder, and its flats stop the bit spinning in a three-jaw chuck. A rotary hammer with a slotted-shank chuck needs a chuck adapter to take these bits.
How do I choose the bit for a wall plug?
Use the drill size given for the plug. Drill a little deeper than the plug is long, so dust at the bottom of the hole does not stop it going in flush.
Can these bits drill metal or wood?
Not well. A masonry tip scrapes and chips rather than cuts, so it rubs and overheats in steel and tears wood. Use the HSS bits of the Drill Bit Set for those materials.
Why has the bit stopped cutting?
Dust may be packed in the flutes, or the bit has overheated. Pull it back to clear the hole, lower the speed and let the bit cool. A tip that glows or turns blue has been run too fast.
