What Is the Cement Minerals Collection Used For?

The set follows the raw materials of ordinary Portland cement. Limestone, whose mineral is calcite, is heated with clay in a kiln to form clinker; silica sand, bauxite, laterite and iron-rich red ochre are added in small amounts to adjust the silica, alumina and iron content of the mix; and gypsum is ground with the clinker to control how fast the cement sets. Fluorite helps the clinker form at a lower kiln temperature, pumice is a natural pozzolan used in blended cements, and lignite is a fuel for the kiln.

Teachers use the collection in geography lessons on mineral-based industries, in chemistry topics on calcium compounds and in polytechnic courses on building materials. The asbestos specimen recalls the asbestos-cement sheets and pipes once widely made; its fibres are hazardous if inhaled, so keep that specimen in a closed container, never break or scrape it, and check national import rules before export, as many countries ban or restrict asbestos.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 collections.
  • Asbestos specimen — raise it in your enquiry if your school rules or import regulations do not allow asbestos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which minerals are in the cement set?
Fifteen specimens, listed as asbestos, barytes, bauxite, calcite, clay, feldspar, fluorite, gypsum, laterite, lignite, limestone, mica, pumice, red ochre and silica sand as typical contents. Confirm the list with your quotation.

Why is gypsum part of a cement collection?
A few per cent of gypsum is ground with the clinker to slow the setting of cement; without it, cement mixed with water would stiffen almost at once.

Is the asbestos specimen safe to handle?
Only with care. Keep it in a closed container, do not break or scrape it, and let staff handle it. Raise it with JLab before ordering if your school or country does not allow asbestos.

Who manufactures this collection?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, assembles it at its Ambala works in Haryana, India, and quotes for it as the manufacturer.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of geography and earth science lab equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. This cement minerals set is assembled at JLab’s own works, not bought from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy from the maker, and repeat orders are supplied from the same source. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Barbados in Central America and the Caribbean, Namibia in Southern Africa, Luxembourg in Western Europe, Uzbekistan in Central Asia and Togo in West Africa. Details for tender buyers are on the JLab lab tenders page.
