What Is the Paint Minerals Collection Used For?

A paint is a pigment for colour and covering power, a binder that sticks it to the surface, a thinner, and extenders or fillers that add body. This set covers both mineral roles. Red and yellow ochre are natural iron-oxide earth pigments, manganese ores give browns and blacks, and graphite goes into heat-resistant and anticorrosive coatings. Barytes, calcite, chalk, limestone, dolomite, talc, mica, silica, pyrophyllite and gypsum are used as extenders: they fill out the paint film, help it flow and sand smoothly, and, in the case of flaky mica, improve its resistance to weathering.

Teachers use the collection in geography lessons on mineral-based industries, in chemistry topics on pigments and in polytechnic courses on paints and coatings. Galena, a lead ore, is a reminder that lead pigments were once common in paint and are now restricted because lead is toxic, so wash hands after handling it. The asbestos specimen should stay in a closed container and never be broken or scraped, as its fibres are hazardous if inhaled; check national import rules before export.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the minimum order is 10 collections.
  • Asbestos and galena — raise these in your enquiry if school rules or import regulations limit them.
  • Companion sets — paper-industry, earthy minerals or streak sets, linked below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which minerals are in the paint set?
Twenty, listed as asbestos, barytes, calcite, chalk, dolomite, fluorite, galena, graphite, gypsum, jasper, limestone, manganese ore, mica, yellow ochre, pyrite, pyrophyllite, quartz, red ochre, silica sand and talc as typical contents.

What is the difference between a pigment and an extender?
A pigment, such as ochre, gives the paint its colour and hiding power. An extender, such as barytes, chalk or talc, adds bulk and improves how the paint flows, dries and sands, while costing less than pigment.

Who manufactures this collection?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, assembles it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it as the manufacturer.
