Ice Sheet and Icebergs Model (code EL-ERAM-4402) is a geography teaching model about continent-scale bodies of ice and the icebergs that break away from them. It covers three linked ideas: an ice sheet is a mass of glacial land ice extending more than 50,000 square kilometres, an ice shelf is its floating extension, and iceberg calving is the main way ice shelves lose mass. JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd) makes it at its works in Ambala, India.

What Is the Ice Sheet and Icebergs Model Used For?
Only two ice sheets exist today, covering most of Antarctica and Greenland. Their ice spreads slowly outward under its own weight, and where it reaches the coast it can float out over the sea as an ice shelf. Blocks of ice that break away from the front of the shelf — calving — drift off as icebergs, which are freshwater ice with most of their volume hidden below the waterline. The model gives students one picture of that whole chain, from land ice to floating shelf to iceberg.
It suits lessons on glaciers in school geography and class 11 physical geography, where an ice sheet is treated as the continental type of glacier. Set beside a valley glacier model, it lets students compare ice confined to a mountain valley with ice covering a whole landmass.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an ice sheet and an ice shelf?
An ice sheet rests on land and, by the definition used here, covers more than 50,000 square kilometres; an ice shelf is the part that has flowed out and floats on the sea as the sheet’s extension.
How do icebergs form?
Mainly by calving: pieces of ice break off the edge of an ice shelf and float away. The listing names calving as the primary way ice shelves lose mass.
OEM Manufacturer
Behind the JLab name is Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of school and college science and geography teaching aids, incorporated in 2017 and located on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. Models are made in its own works rather than sourced from traders, so institutions, dealers and importers buy direct from the producer and every unit is checked by eye before it ships. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Sudan in North Africa, Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia, Ukraine in Eastern Europe, Myanmar in Southeast Asia and Vanuatu in Oceania.
