What Is the Paper Minerals Collection Used For?

Paper is a mat of cellulose fibres, but much of a printing sheet is mineral. China clay (kaolin) and calcium carbonate from calcite and limestone fill the spaces between the fibres, making the sheet whiter, smoother and more opaque, and they are also used to coat art paper. Talc, and the talc-rich rock soapstone, act as fillers and help control sticky resin (pitch) during pulping. Other specimens show chemical and specialist uses: magnesite supplies magnesium oxide for some sulphite pulping processes, pyrite was burned to make the sulphur dioxide those processes need, barytes forms the baryta layer of traditional photographic paper, and mica flakes are made into mica paper for electrical insulation.

The set suits geography lessons on forest- and mineral-based industries, chemistry topics on carbonates and sulphur compounds, and polytechnic courses in pulp and paper technology. A simple classroom activity is to compare a glossy magazine page with newsprint and discuss the role of fillers and coatings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which minerals are in the paper set?
Ten, listed as barytes, calcite, china clay, limestone, magnesite, mica, pyrite, red ochre, soapstone and talc as typical contents.

Why are minerals added to paper?
Fillers such as china clay, calcium carbonate and talc make paper brighter, smoother and more opaque, improve how it takes ink, and reduce the amount of fibre needed.

Who manufactures this collection?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd) assembles it at its Ambala works in Haryana, India, and quotes for it as the manufacturer.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an educational lab equipment manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The paper minerals set is put together at JLab’s own works, not resold from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers deal with the maker and repeat orders are filled by the same works. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Tajikistan in Central Asia, Paraguay in South America, South Korea in East Asia, Australia in Oceania and Serbia in Southern Europe. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
