What Is the Meander and Oxbow Lake Model Used For?

Where a river crosses gentle, low-lying ground it starts to wind. On the outside of each bend the water flows fastest and wears the bank away; on the inside it slows and drops sand and silt. Over time the loops grow until only a narrow neck of land separates two bends. In a flood the river breaks through that neck and takes the shorter path, deposits seal off the old loop, and the abandoned bend is left behind as an oxbow lake, which may later silt up into a marsh.

The model lets students follow this sequence on one landscape: outer-bank erosion, inner-bank deposition and the cut-off. It fits the work of a river in class 7 geography and the river landforms studied in class 11 physical geography.
