Eyepieces and Objective Series
The WF5X eyepiece suits a wide, low-power survey of a slide, while the WF15X raises the power of every objective; both are high-point types that leave room for spectacles. The infinity plan-achromatic, plan-achromatic and semi-plan series each run 4X, 10X, 20X, 40X and 100X, with (S) marking the spring-loaded lenses. Plan types keep the field flat to its edge.
Setting Up Phase Contrast
Phase contrast makes unstained living cells visible by turning small differences in refractive index into differences in brightness. Each PH objective has a phase ring that must line up with the light annulus from the condenser: the centring telescope goes in place of an eyepiece so the two can be brought together, and the turret condenser is switched to suit the objective in use. The green filter narrows the light to the colour the phase optics are corrected for.
