Choose this model when you need the widest choice of sizes in the series — ten metric ranges up to 250 mm and matching inch ranges up to 10 in — at a 0.01 mm reading. The engraved-marking model has its scale lines engraved instead of printed, the micron-reading model reads to 0.001 mm for finer work, the wide-range model covers a wider span with one frame by changing anvils, and the digital micrometer shows the reading on an LCD screen.
What Is the Outside Micrometer Used For?
An outside micrometer measures the external size of a part — the diameter of a rod, wire or ball, or the thickness of a plate — between a fixed anvil and a moving spindle. The spindle advances on a precision screw, so each turn of the thimble moves it by a small fixed distance, and the thimble graduations divide that movement into 0.01 mm steps. It is the workshop form of the screw gauge used in class 11 physics practicals, and a standard instrument in engineering metrology labs, polytechnic and ITI fitter and machinist training, and quality-control benches.
The ratchet stop helps each user close the spindle with a similar force, and the locking clamp holds the spindle so a reading is kept while the micrometer is lifted away. Carbide-tipped faces resist wear better than plain steel faces. Each frame covers one 25 mm (1 in) span, so a lab or workshop that measures parts of different sizes usually needs several ranges.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Measuring range — metric (0–25 mm up to 225–250 mm) or inch (0–1 in up to 9–10 in), and how many of each range you need.
- Scale and reading — this printed-marking model at 0.01 mm, the engraved-marking model, or the micron-reading model at 0.001 mm.
- Other measuring tools — vernier calipers or school screw gauges are separate items that can be quoted on the same enquiry.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the least count of this outside micrometer?
0.01 mm on the metric ranges and 0.001 in on the inch ranges. For readings to 0.001 mm, JLab lists a separate outside micrometer with micron reading.
Which sizes are available?
Ten metric ranges in 25 mm steps, from 0–25 mm to 225–250 mm, and ten inch ranges in 1 in steps, from 0–1 in to 9–10 in. Each micrometer covers one range, so choose the ranges that match the parts you measure.
What is the difference between printed and engraved marking?
On this model the scale lines are printed on the surface; on the engraved-marking model they are cut into it. Both are listed with carbide-tipped faces, a locking clamp, a ratchet stop and a 0.01 mm / 0.001 in least count; the engraved model is listed in four ranges up to 75–100.
Why does the micrometer have a ratchet stop?
So the spindle closes on the part with a consistent force. The ratchet slips once that force is reached, which reduces the reading differences that come from turning the thimble harder or more gently.
Is an outside micrometer the same as a school screw gauge?
Both work on the same screw principle. The school screw gauge is a simpler instrument for class 11 practicals, while this micrometer adds carbide-tipped faces, a ratchet stop and a locking clamp. JLab lists the Micrometer Screw Gauge as a separate item.
What information is needed for an export quotation?
Send the ranges and quantities, the destination country and port or city, your preferred delivery terms (for example FOB or CIF), any packing or labelling needs, and the tender reference if the order is for a tender.
Who manufactures this micrometer?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, trading as JLab, makes it at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India, and quotes for it directly.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of laboratory and measuring instruments in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. These micrometers are produced at JLab’s own works rather than sourced from a trader, so schools, colleges, training institutes, dealers and importers buy factory-direct; every piece is visually inspected before it is packed, and repeat orders for further ranges are handled by the same manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Slovenia in Southern Europe, Kuwait in the Middle East, Mexico in North America, Bhutan in South Asia and Zambia in East Africa. Institutions buying through a tender can find details on the JLab lab tenders page.
