Pulse Code Modulation and Demodulation Trainer

Product Code : EL-CT-1506
Jlab Export is a leading Pulse Code Modulation and Demodulation Trainer Manufacturer, and suppliers in India

Pulse Code Modulation and Demodulation Trainer (code EL-CT-1506) is a communication trainer for studying how an analog signal is converted into pulse code modulated (PCM) data and decoded back again. It has its own PCM encoder and decoder and a 33 kHz TTL clock generator. It is made by Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab) at its works in Ambala, India.

What Is the PCM Trainer Used For?

Pulse code modulation is the standard way of putting an analog signal into digital form. The signal is sampled at regular intervals, each sample is quantised to the nearest of a fixed set of levels, and that level is sent as a binary code word; the decoder turns the code words back into levels and a low-pass filter smooths them into the original waveform. PCM underlies digital telephony, CD audio and most digital recording, and it is the reference against which DPCM and delta modulation are compared. On this trainer students can follow a signal from analog input to code and back on the oscilloscope.

The operating instructions set out the object, theory, design procedure, report suggestions and book references.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity of PCM trainers.
  • Mains — the trainer runs on 230 V ±10%, 50 Hz AC; please check this matches your laboratory supply.
  • Other pulse coding trainers — the DPCM, delta modulation and PAM boards below are separate items that can be added to the enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What signals are available on the board besides the clock?
A modulating signal generator covering 15 Hz to 300 Hz and a variable DC output adjustable from +5 V to −9 V. A steady DC input holds the code still long enough to read on the LED data display, while the low-frequency signal shows the code changing with the waveform.

What does quantisation do to the signal?
Rounding each sample to the nearest level adds a small error called quantisation noise. More bits per code word mean more levels, a smaller error and a higher signal-to-quantisation-noise ratio, at the cost of a higher bit rate.

How does it differ from the Differential Pulse Code Modulation and Demodulation Trainer?
Both have a 5 V DC, 100 mA IC regulated supply and a variable DC output. This trainer sends each sample as a full PCM code; the DPCM trainer has a DPCM encoder and decoder, which code the difference between samples instead.

What else is needed for the experiments?
A 20 MHz cathode ray oscilloscope, which is a separate item; patch cords are provided with the trainer. JLab’s Dual Trace Oscilloscope, linked below, can be quoted alongside it.

What should an export enquiry contain?
The quantity, the destination country and port or city, the delivery terms required (for example FOB or CIF), any packing or labelling needs, and the tender reference if there is one.

Who manufactures this PCM trainer?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd), at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of communication trainers and electronics laboratory equipment, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. This PCM trainer is made in JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so colleges, institutes, dealers and importers order it from the maker, and later orders and spares are handled by the same works. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Canada in North America, New Zealand in Oceania, Qatar in the Middle East, Zambia in East Africa and Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
